Trauma & Past Experiences

Digital illustration of a brain with a highlighted affected area.

You can move forward without ignoring what you've been through.

Our experiences can shape the way we see ourselves, relate to others, and respond to the world around us. Sometimes the effects of difficult or traumatic experiences continue long after the event itself has passed.

You may understand intellectually that something happened in the past, yet still find yourself reacting as though you're back in it. You may struggle with trust, relationships, boundaries, self-worth, anxiety, or feeling safe and comfortable in your own life.

You don't have to minimize what happened or have a specific diagnosis to recognize that your past is affecting your present.

Therapy can provide a supportive space to understand those patterns and begin developing a different relationship with your experiences.

Trauma counseling is not about reliving the past. It is about building understanding, restoring a sense of control, and helping you feel more grounded and present in your life.

When the Past Shows Up in the Present

Trauma can affect people in many different ways. Sometimes the connection is obvious. Other times, the effects can look like anxiety, perfectionism, emotional numbness, difficulty trusting others, people-pleasing, or feeling the need to stay in control.

You may be experiencing:

  • Anxiety or hypervigilance
  • Difficulty trusting others
  • Feeling disconnected or emotionally numb
  • Difficulty setting or maintaining boundaries
  • People-pleasing or fear of disappointing others
  • Persistent shame or self-blame
  • Low self-worth
  • Difficulty regulating strong emotions
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Feeling unsafe even when you're objectively safe
  • Avoidance of people, places, or situations
  • Patterns you understand intellectually but struggle to change

Understanding these responses can be an important first step toward changing them.

Creating a Greater Sense of Safety

Trauma therapy isn't about forcing yourself to revisit experiences before you're ready. It's about creating a pace and therapeutic relationship that allows you to feel supported as you explore what you're experiencing.

Together, we can work toward understanding how past experiences may have shaped your thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and relationships. We'll also identify the strengths and resources you've developed along the way.

My approach is grounded in safety, collaboration, and respect for your individual experience. I draw from evidence-based approaches including CBT, ACT, and nervous system-informed strategies, tailoring our work to your experiences, needs, and goals.

Healing Doesn't Mean Forgetting

Moving forward doesn't require pretending that difficult experiences didn't happen. It means developing greater freedom in how you respond to them and how much influence they have over your present life.

Therapy can help you develop greater self-awareness, emotional resilience, confidence, and connection while building new ways of relating to yourself and others.

You deserve the opportunity to feel more grounded in the present rather than continually shaped by the past.

You don't have to navigate it alone.

If you're ready to better understand your experiences and create meaningful change, therapy can provide a supportive place to begin.
